Description:

The Museum of Art and Archaeology of Aurillac is located downtown in a former convent of Visitation, which later became the National Stud in the 19th and 20th centuries.
This building with modern architecture, built in the 17th century, houses the museum since 1980.

You will be able to enjoy: - Rooms showing you the traditionnal Cantal life, with visual and sound effects,
- The Department of Cantal Archaeology, with focus on Prehistory, the Metal Ages, the Gallo-Roman, the Middle Ages,
- A learning center with temporary exhibitions,
- The Department of Beaux Arts, with painting & photography sections, and also temporary exhibitions.

The stables and saddlery respectively welcome temporary exhibitions about contemporary art and contemporary photographs, all the year.

Planning:

An hour is good to understanding the history of the inhabitants of the Massif Central, from prehistory until the industrial era.

The museum is open according to the following schedule:
- From February to November: From Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00,
- In July and August, the museum is also open on Sundays from 14:00 to 18:00,
The museum is closed on bank holidays.
Special openings: In March for the Telerama Weekend, during the Night of Museums event in May (from 19:00 to 01:00 a.m.), and in September for Heritage Days.

The opening hours of the Stables are:
From Monday to Saturday, from 13:30 to 18:30.
Closed during bank holidays.
Free admission.
Open in the morning by appointment for groups.
Accessible to disable persons.

- Open from Tuesday to Saturday from 14:00 to 18:00.
Closed during bank holidays.

Comments:

This archaeological museum has also a rich collection of papers of three generations of photographers that illustrate well over a century of local life.

A third part of exhibition is very special as it shows the umbrella industry which was very important in the 1920s: in Aurillac were produced over a million umbrellas a year.

Entertainment for all are held by appointment (+33 (0)4-71-45-46-10), such as:
- Become an artist,
- On Wednesday the museum is open once a month for the 4-12 years old,
- The rendez-vous of the museum (Saturdays afternoon),
- Eyes closed,
- Celebrate your birthday at the museum for the 4-12 years old, on Wednesday or Saturday from 14:30 to 17:00, limited to 10 children per birthday.

The museum is accessible to disable persons.
It is labellized Tourism & Handicap (motor and mental).
