The Oceanographic Institute is a private foundation, state-approved. It has been created in 1906 by Albert I, Prince of Monaco.

Its mission is to make the ocean known.

Several aquariums provide a better understanding of the world oceans:
- 5 tropical aquariums
- An aquarium with jellyfish
- 3 Mediterranean aquariums.

The Oceanographic Institute has two locations:
- Paris, welcoming place for all those wishing to deepen their knowledge of the world of the sea, also a meeting place for students and researchers;
- On the Rock of Monaco, to house the collections of His Serene Highness Prince Albert 1, and to continue his research, and where are the famous aquariums known and recognized all around the world.

The foundation has celebrated its centennial in 2006.

The shop has many items, books and toys relating to the world of the sea.
