The region of Champagnac abounds in coal. At the time, people extracted it themselves for their own needs. Then in 1842 the franchise has been purchased and in 1882 its operating increased with the arrival of the railroad.
More than 800 miners worked in the early 20th century and during its closing in 1959 there were still 250 miners employed at the sites.

The mine museum of Champagnac has the will to trace the human and technical adventure of the largest mine of Auvergne.
