The MNE has been founded in 1879 by Jules Ferry in Paris.
His goal at the time was political: it was an educational museum to promoting popular instruction.
Since then, the museum saw its collections initially stored rue d'Ulm being moved in Rouen in 1980.

The objective of the MNE is now to keep the school heritage, to show and to study it.
