Seven prehistoric places have been discovered in the valley of the Gorge d'Enfer. This type of geological region is indeed particularly interesting: the infiltration of water into the soil and the dissolution of limestone form caves and holes.

Our ancestors found here shelters they sought.

The cave of the fish is typical of the emptied sites, which was fairly common practice in the early 20th century.
This is why only two ornaments are still in the cave. It is possible that there had previously paintings, but the rock wall have been cleansed in 1917. A testimony from 1915 also mentions a head hawk carved into the rock, but it was probably sold at that time.

It is necessary to book 15 days one month before the visit. Indeed, the number of visitors is limited to better preserve the paintings.

Booking can be done at the welcome desk of Font-de-Gaume in Les Eyzies, on +33 (0)5-53-06-86-00 (Tourist Office of Les Eyzies: +33 (0)5-53-06-97-05).
