Rocamadour is a medieval city but has an history that goes back to cavemen.
It is difficult to summarize its history in a few lines. We will do so through the historic sites nearby:
- Paleolithic: A human presence has left a very interesting drawings in the Prehistorical Cave of the Merveilles;
- Bronze Age: a necropolis in the Linars cave;
- Iron Age: ruins of a village in the Salvate valley created by the Cadurci came from Germany;
- Roman Empire: Oppidum on the heights of the Alzou Valley, downstream of Tournefeuille;
- Middle-Age: Creation of three floors of the village of Rocamadour, representing the three levels of knights, clergy and merchants.
According to a legend, Durandal, the sword of Roland (Hruodland in Frankish, said Roland the brave), was brought in Rocamadour by the Archangel Michael. This sword was given by Charlemagne to Sir Roland. He was killed in a battle to defend France against the Britons in 778 at Roncevaux and his tomb was erected in the basilica of Saint-Romain de Blaye (Gironde).
- 1148: The first local miracle is formalized by the church;
- 1166: During the burial of a deceased, a former body was found intact. It was Amadour who, according to several legends, was a character close to Jesus.
Finally, the village is the site of an ancient pilgrimage dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The statue dedicated to him is now in one of the chapels in the sanctuary peaks on the throats of the Alzou river.
- Decline until the 19th century, through several wars and during the revolution.
- Reconstruction until 1872 when restoration work was completed.

Rocamadour is located in Lot, in the community of communes of the Pays de Souillac Rocamadour, at the North of the Regional Natural Park of causses of Quercy, close to the Perigord and to the Dordogne Valley.
It is located at the Northwest of Gramat, at 54km at the south of Brive-la-Gaillarde and at 71km at the North of Cahors, at the East of the A20.
- From Brive-la-Gaillarde, take the exit 54 from the A20, direction Gramat. Cross Martel then take the direction of Rocamadour.
- From Cahors, take the exit 56 of the A20 towards Figeac, Decazeville, Rodez and Aurillac. Cross Gramat then take the direction of Rocamadour.

A weekend is ideal for taking the time to visit the village and the surrounding areas.

Most fans will spend the week before returning later.

Walks and hikes are organized locally.
Local events such as transhumance (April the 17th, 2012 for example) are also set-up.

In 2011, Rocamadour has been the third most visited site in France after Paris and the Mont Saint-Michel: more than one million visitors came totaling 250.000 nights, two-thirds being done in July and August.
